Enabling E1 replacement services over ADSL

As SIP trunking and IP Centrex gain momentum in the UK, a barrier is emerging which could seriously impact the opportunity for the providers and the channel. This barrier is upstream bandwidth over ADSL.

With an average upstream of 256k, service providers and resellers are limited to 4 or 5 concurrent calls before SDSL or leased lines have to be considered. This cost hike negates the value proposition and, we believe, is having a significant negative effect on the space as a whole.

ViBE is a technology which enhances the quality and reduces the bandwidth use of VoIP when transmitted over a public or private IP network such as the Internet or an MPLS cloud. It improves on the principles of enhanced RTP header compression by using various techniques, and enables voice to co-exist with data in a way that is unprecedented when using traditional Quality of Service. It also allows bandwidth allocation between data applications in a far more granular way than was previously possible.

|| Service Provider Proposition

ViBE allows IP Centrex providers and/or ISP's to enhance their service proposition, increase customer acquisition and lower costs per seat by squeezing more VoIP performance out of a standard ADSL service. With ViBE, your customers and partners can sell 4-5 times the amount of seats per circuit without the cost of upgrading circuits and routers which can potentially make or break the value proposition.

|| Reseller Proposition

For resellers of WAN connectivity, ViBE provides relief for existing WAN links using VoIP by reducing the bandwidth used by 4-5 times. Suddenly links become freed up for critical data applications while still providing QoS, increased efficiency and improved voice quality to boot ! ViBE can also be deployed across satellite circuits, Wireless radio links, International VPNs and MPLS networks. If there's VoIP on the line, ViBE can help.

|| Product Features

  • Up to 28 simultaneous calls on a 256k link.
  • A broadband transmission mode is available which increases the efficiency of a broadband link for data transfer as well. This enables link layer efficiency to increase to better than 90% as opposed to less than 70% which is more typical.
  • Reduces jitter to sub 2ms average in the presence of any amount of data.
  • Switch to a backup link in less than five seconds and without losing any calls.
  • Controls data bandwidth allocation in a way which prevents “choppy” data transfer
  • Up to eight separate queues with their own bandwidth allocation are supported.

ViBE - Service Provider Deployment

ViBE is deployed in the core of the network and at the edge to provide the massive bandwidth benefits. At the CPE, an Open WRT compatible xDSL router OR a bridge device can be installed between the LAN and WAN. Once in place, the devices build a ViBE tunnel between themselves and a central ViBE appliance which strips our all of the overhead and rebuilds it before sending it on the the SIP Trunking or IP Centrex platform.

the end result is a network which is able to carry 4 times the amount of calls than previously (based on G729a) with improved jitter, latency and user experience.

ViBE - Enterprise Deployment

For wide area networks and VPN's, ViBE is just as applicable as it provides much needed additional bandwidth across voice and data links to enteprises.

For point to point or point to multi-point connectivity, ViBE is a drop and insert solution to VoIP delivery.

ViBE - Customer Premise Equipment

The ViBE CPE platform is deployed between the edge router and the LAN or it can replace the edge router altogether. It captures all VoIP traffic and strips out the repetitive transport inherent with VoIP getting a G729a call down to 8.1k from it's original circa 40k. Once processed, the VoIP is sent to the central ViBE appliance in a significantly reduced state to be rebuilt and sent on to the SIP trunking or IP Centrex platform.

ViBE uses OpenWrt as a basis to integrate itself with many, many CPE routers. Click here for a listing of supported platforms.
